Dive Journal - Florida Keys, Islamorada - Tony & Lynn Smith - May 2010
Tony and Lynn Smith went diving off the coast of Islamorada in the Florida Keys in late May 2010. They planned this trip on their own and found Key Dives in Islamorada. Key Dives provided two tank trips that included
dive masters and took care of all equipment during the trip. The dive masters knew the dive sites very well and were able to direct divers to the best part of the reefs describing what you would see and where to look.
During this trip Tony and Lynn did two days of diving and dove the following sites:
Alligator Reef - This reef is located at about 70 feet and has a lot of life. There were many schools of fish, lobsters and eels. There was virtually no current at the site and good visibility, about 30 ft. Water temperatures were in the 70s.
No Name Reef - This reef is the home to a couple of nurse sharks and is located in about 40 feet of water.
Eagle Wreck - The Eagle was sunk as an artificial reef in 1985. Since then the wreck was split in half in 1998 by Hurricane Georges. Current can be somewhat strong getting to this wreck which is located in about 115 feet of water with the shallowest point at 70 feet.
This wreck is home to a wide variety of fish including some protected species. Visibility was about 20 feet.
Hamm Reef - This reef is in about 35 feet of water and has a wide variety of fish, eels, lobsters, crabs, and many nurse sharks. Visibility was about 25 feet.
While in the Keys Tony and Lynn stayed at the Island Bay Resort providing reasonable priced cottages. The place was clean and had its own small private beach. There where also many good places to eat including the Island Grill with great seafood and the Islamorada Restaurant & Bakery which was a great place for breakfast.
