Dive Journal - Paradise Island, Bahamas - Bob and Maureen- May 2011

Paradise Island, Bahamas Roatan, Honduras By Maureen Kverek Last July, Bob and I took our honeymoon on a club trip to Roatan, Honduras (run by Pat Bennett). We stayed at Anthony’s Key Resort and dove the sites on the northwest side of Roatan, one of the Bay Islands. We personally did 20 dives in 6 days (which included 2 night dives and 2 wrecks). Since we are newly certified and only had 15 dives previously (10 were part of our certification at Dutch Springs), this was a truly UNBELIEVABLE experience. We were amazed at the colorful reef and fish. My favorite experience was swimming next to the sea turtles. They weren’t afraid at all and you could reach out and touch their shell as they were eating. We saw moray eels, lobsters, angel fish, trunk fish, groupers, a toad fish, giant crabs, eagle rays, cleaner shrimp—and I really worked on my Fish ID on this trip. It was amazing!! The group was a wonderful group. We appreciated all the dive masters that went on the trip and gave us little tips here and there. It was my first experience going into a swim-through which made me nervous, but I’m so glad I didn’t chicken out. The food was great, the diving was close, and the boat always left on time. The group really looked out for each other and we felt like we made some new friends on this trip. We enjoyed the company, had a few laughs! My hubby, Bob, represented the Club in the limbo contest---not bad coming in second! Pat had everything well organized and made it a very enjoyable honeymoon for us!!! Pat had a minor incident with an overly aggressive grouper, but he made it out alive! It is definitely a trip of a lifetime!!! (Of course, we all agreed that the channel dive we were all excited about was just a flashback to Dutch Springs)!.

There was also horseback riding and a zip line trip that were available. We kayaked in the channel, which was nice and relaxing and strolled over to the see the new baby dolphin that was a week old. There was a Fiesta Night and a BBQ on a private island (Maya Key). They also had fire dancers, a band, and we enjoyed happy hour by the pool before dinner. Everyone was in bed by 8:30 each night just because of the intense activities (but we popped up like toast at 5-5:30 AM). Play hard or go home!!
